Iceland’s Children’s Minister resigns after revelation – Had sex with a boy and had a child

Iceland’s Children’s Minister, Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir, 58, resigns from her post, after a revelation that she had sex with a 15-year-old boy and had a child with him – 35 years ago.

This is said to have happened when Þórsdóttir was 22 years old. She met the boy in connection with her leadership of youth work within a religious community.

Þórsdóttir does not think she abused the boy, and believes it was the boy’s fault. “I didn’t think it was normal at the time. He was madly in love with me, even though I tried to get away, it didn’t work,” she told Ruv.

Þórsdóttir gives the reason for her resignation by saying, “This personal matter of mine, which is now 35 years old, should not overshadow the good work that the government is doing. They are more important than the issues that I am working on inside the Ministry of Education, which I very much regret not being able to complete”.
