Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims Cristiano Ronaldo was subjected to a “political ban” at the World Cup football in Qatar when they didn’t let the Portuguese superstar play from start for Portugal.

“Sending a footballer like Ronaldo to the pitch with just 30 minutes remaining to the match ruined his psychology and took away his energy,” Erdogan said during a youth event in Turkey when he compared Ronaldo to Lionel Messi, Al-Jazeera reports.

The Turkish leader said that Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘someone who stands for the Palestinian cause’, regarding the conflict with Israel.
