The “key Russian” ally, Belarus, has decided to legalize digital piracy. From now on it’s free to download copyrighted material in the country. But only from so called “unfriendly countries” in the western world according to the new legislation.

From now on, on temporary basis, it will be free to donwload all kinds of software, movies and music in Belarus, without asking for permission from the copyright holder, according to Russian state owned media RT.

The law “will give an opportunity to import original goods not only to copyright holders of the object of intellectual property or their official distributors, but to any importers. This temporary measure is aimed at preventing a shortage of imported goods and saturating the consumer market,” the Belarusian government explained on its official Telegram channel, RT reports.

The decree was signed by the Belarusian President, Aleksander Lukashenko, and set to come into force next week, and will be in force until December 31, 2024.
